Earnse Bay

This open sandy beach is the most popular in the area getting quite busy in the summer. It is a popular spot for both windsurfing and kitesurfing with a kite surf school on the beach. It is also a venue for national kitesurfing championships.

Walney Island – Sandy Gap

To the west of the island, Sandy Gap Beach offers a wide expanse of sand, and is a perfect place to come for long windswept walks and beachcombing.

West Shore Walney Island

Walney Island has two nature reserves, both administered by the Cumbria Wildlife Trust.  The reserve at South Walney is a stop-off point for a wide variety of migratory birds and is home to Cumbria’s only colony of grey seals. The island is also home to some interesting plant life, including the pale pink Walney Geranium, a plant unique to the island.

Biggar Bank Walney Island

Biggar Bank beach is located on the more exposed west coast of Walney Island The beach here has a more remote feeling than those further north. The beach is a mixture of smooth pebbles and sand backed by a caravan site with a large area of salt marshes beyond.

Roanhead

Picturesque sandy expanse located around 3 miles north of Barrow-in-Furness. From the beach there are great views of the beautiful Duddon Estuary and the Lake Fells beyond. The big tidal range of Roan Head beach exposes huge sandy flats but also causes strong currents making it unsuitable for swimming. The beach here is an important nature reserve which is home to numerous rare plants and insects along with an estimated 15% of the UK’s natterjack toad population.

Askam-in-Furness

The long, sandy beach in front of Askam village is situated on the northern coast of the Furness peninsula. Backed by dunes and marshes, the coast here offers views over the sands of the Duddon Estuary.

Rampside

Located on the southern fringes of Barrow, this pebble beach is easily accessible from the road. A causeway leads to Roa Island and there is a summer ferry service to Piel Island.
